DIY FRIDAYS | Reclaimed wood wall decor

October 23, 2015

My dad is the “I can make that” type of guy.. and I love that about him. He is such a talented man and is so gifted with his hands. He has a niche for envisioning beautiful things from the mundane, and then goes the extra mile to create it and brings that vision to life. I call him the original Pinterest because this guy makes the COOLEST things and they’re always very unique!  Eric Smith originals 😉  you would actually be mind. blown. Maybe I should do a future blog post on some of his awesome work or you could just come over to our house and check it out for yourself!

Anyhow, me and my dad love going to old thrift shops and old country antique stores (LUCKETTS!!!) 🙂 and I can’t count the times I have fallen in love with some decor and his one-liner almost without fail every time is “We could totally make that!” like psh Hannah! C’mon. I know he could do it because this guy is like superman to me, ever since I was a kid if we had a problem he was our go-to guy. Dad could do anything in our eyes. and obviously now, I have a more realistic perspective on what my dad can do and handle at his age and I am still stunned. Sometimes I lack this confidence.  Believing that I can create it/ do it myself. Being able to bring life to that vision in my head. But more times then not I surprised myself and realize my Dad’s positive outlook is what we should all be practicing and believing, Because we are capable of doing a lot more then we believe to be true.

This post turned out to be a little longer than anticipated, but thats okay because my Dad deserves a shoutout! thanks for dreaming with me and being my biggest fan.

This weeks DIY Friday was made specifically for my Bro Jonah, this is his first year at VT and I  wanted to make him something for his dorm. As I was brainstorming ideas I realized that it is really so much easier to make things for girls decor than it is for guys! I thought a patriotic theme would be a good idea and I knew I wanted to incorporate some old reclaimed wood into, because I love all things rustic!! I was out to lunch and got a old glass coke bottle (my preference) and thats where my idea for using bottle caps to make out the flag came from. I really loved the way it turned out and besides collecting all the bottle caps, it was a rather quick project.

The supplies you will need:

-Some reclaimed wood ( size is up to you)

-Bottle caps ( I got my whole family HOOKED on coke for weeks to make this happen. Ha! whoops! totally worth it)

-Wood Glue
